Then, in the 2nd part of theAstro FDJ, if you discover two identical qualities (such as wisdom for the balance sign, or perseverance for the scorpions), then you gain the second gain in the "Gain 2" box.

The gains are of course cumulative between the first game Astro and the second for a maximum amount of 20,000 euros

The game Astro Illiko is a bit special, in fact there are 12 different tickets, each representing one of the signs of the zodiac. Games of chance and scratch games

Today, games of chance are made up of several sub-types of games:

  • The so-called "draw" games, such as the Lotto or the Euro-Million, which consist of betting on the exit of a series of figures drawn a posteriori by the gaming company.
  • Betting, which consists of betting on the sports results of games such as football, fights like boxing or the arrival of a race of horses or greyhounds.
  • So-called "scratch" or "instant" games such as "Black Jack", "Astro" or "Bingo". These games of chance, all grouped under the brand name "Illiko" in France, consist of scratching one or more parts of a ticket to discover the gain obtained.

The scratch games have a low cost and offer, if necessary, an immediate gain. They are more and more popular 1 and it is therefore to these games that we will be interested.

Games of chance have evolved significantly over time, whether in terms of their form (dice, cards, ossicles) at the level of the stakes (plots of land in the Old Testament, predicting the future in the Far East, attribution market places in the 13th century in Brussels) or their status (illegal in many countries such as Korea today or in France until the 17th century 2). In other words, games of chance are almost as old as civilizations.

In France, it was with the help of the Royal Lottery in 1658 that was financed the General Hospital of Paris 3, now called "Salpêtrière". The Française des Jeux (FDJ) will succeed the National Lottery in 1976, which financed aid to veterans or farmers affected. Games companies are often public: in France, the state has 72% of the shares of the FDJ.

Worldwide, gambling sales (lotto, scratch cards) represent a significant market ($ 220 billion in 2007 4). For example, in France, the equivalent of 87 million euros are spent every day in games of chance, which equates to an Airbus A321 Neo 1. A large and variable proportion of regular or occasional players try their luck: up to 70% of Spaniards play at least once a year compared to 40% of Germans 5.

A game to lose: the probabilities

In order to fully understand the chances of gains and losses during games of chance (scraping, dice, lotteries etc.) we must approach the probabilities. The notions of probability answer to very strict mathematical rules, but rather simple. As we will see later, our sense of logic can not really understand these rational rules.

The French Games has the obligation to note on the back of scratch games the number of tickets printed and the number of winning prizes with their respective winnings. For example, in the "Black Jack" scratch game, there are 50,000 winning tickets at € 10 out of a total of 1,500,000 tickets. We can know the probability of buying a winning ticket at 10 € by making the report "number of winning tickets at 10 €" / "total number of tickets". If we multiply the result by 100 we get the percentage of chances to win the 10 €. So we have a 3.3% chance of having this winning ticket at 10 € when we buy a ticket from Black Jack. If you take into account the purchase of the card at 2 €, the total gain for the player then falls to 8 €. Theoretically, when buying 100 tickets, 3 will be winners at 10 €. It is possible to buy a single ticket and win 10 € right away, or to play all your life and never have it. But the more we play, the closer we get to a chance of 3.3% to have winning tickets at 10 €. This is the principle of an infinite print in the calculation of probabilities. A principle that is often misunderstood.

To illustrate this notion of infinity printing, we created a small computer model to play the game "coin or face". The probability of getting "stack" is 50%. A simulation of 2 shots gives us 2 batteries, or stack in 100% of cases. We continue to draw the dice. With 10 simulated shots, stack appeared in 30% of cases. We are therefore far from the theoretical probability (50%) and we could almost believe that the calculated probability is false. With 40 shots, we obtained stack in 47.5% of the cases, against 51.1% with 10 000 shots and 50.4% with 20 000. We therefore note that the more we draw the pieces, the more the results of our experiments generally approximate the theoretical probability. Overall, because as we can see there are fluctuations but the trend brings our overall shots closer to 50% of batteries and 50% of faces.

To infinity and beyond

Game companies are clearly in this situation of infinite purchases with regard to the millions of tickets sold to lotto, for example. But in the case of scratch tickets they know in advance the expected gains.

We come to the notion of mathematical expectation. Hope answers the question: "When you buy a ticket, what is the gain you can expect? ". For this we add all the gains (proposed lots) and losses (expenditure for the purchase of each card) divided by the total number of tickets. It shows that the expectation of a "Black Jack" ticket is -0.68 €. So, statistically, every time you buy a black jack ticket, you lose on average 68 cents. This is especially true when you play a lot.

We can add the gains that the French Games distributes to blackjack and those it receives by ticket purchases. On a series of 1.5 million tickets, the net gain of the FDJ is € 1,019,924, despite the € 1,980,076 redistributed to the players. The French games is therefore winning in 100% of cases.

The black jack: we lose on average 0.68 € for each ticket bought

It is quite funny to compare this hope with those of other games: "Astro" at 2 € has a hope of ... -0,68 €! Scratching games "Banco", "Fetish number" and "Goal" cost 1 €. The winnings of the winning tickets differ: 4 tickets to 1000 € for "fetish number" against 2 for "Banco" and 2 to 2000 € for "goal". However, the expectation of these 3 three games is strictly the same: -0.37 €. In other words, the French Games makes sure to give us the chance to lose money with different games! Only support and distribution of earnings change.

So, if we follow the mathematical logic, playing scratching games leads us to lose. Especially if you play often: approaching an infinite number of draws, the average accumulated gains is close to the hope (see the throws of parts above). Concretely, by taking a "regular" player, it is almost certain that his total earnings, or rather his total losses, correspond to the sum of the expectations of all the cards he has bought. To persuade you, we ran a small computer program. We randomly "scraped" 1 card, 10 cards, 1000 cards, 10 000 cards, then 100 000 cards from the "Fetish Number" game. We took the data provided by the French Games for the game "Fetish Number", and draws according to the real probabilities. The draw is done "with discount", that is to say, the probabilities are always the same for each draw. This implies that one successively "scratches" the cards of lots of different cards.

So why do we play if we know we will lose?

According to the National Institute of Prevention and Health Education (inpes) and the FDJ, France in 2010 counted between 25 and 28 million regular or occasional players. Among these players, we classify the very spenders (over 500 € / year), the very regular (play more than once a week) and those who are both at the same time (about 12.2% of players). There are approximately 400,000 people with moderate gambling behavior disorders and 200,000 with severe difficulties. Levels close to those found in the United States where there are between 1 and 2% of pathological players.

Problem gambling is correlated with other risk behaviors 2, 7-9. If 3.2% of French people have problems of alcoholism, they are 26,5% in the population of the players with risks! Ditto for smoking, affecting 30% of French against 64% of players at risk! The most worrying players are mostly men: they bet more than € 125 per month, half of them have a monthly income less than 1 100 euros and a third does not have a single degree 2. It has also been noted that there is an inverse relationship between people's incomes and their gambling habits, regardless of the country studied. The poorest play the most. But why ? One can of course ask the question of the egg or the chicken: does the game lead to alcoholism, or is it the opposite? There does not seem to be an addiction that precedes another. People are more vulnerable to dependence 7, 10 in general because the mechanisms of dependence are similar whatever the dependence 11. Genetics 12 and lifestyle are the triggers 10.

Games Dependencies

An addiction is only possible if it is accessible 10. It makes sense, but to think about it, tobacco bars where you can play games of chance are quite numerous. These dependencies can also be self-sustaining 13, 14: bad luck in the game can cause an excess of alcohol 9, which itself will accent the game etc. 15. And as we have seen, people predisposed to addiction can then find another addiction. Many theories have been put forward about the triggering of the dependence, but it seems that the reasons are multifactorial: social exclusion, mimicry of the entourage, fatalism, family or judicial difficulties would be the causes 2, 5. The question is not yet fully elucidated.

Pathological gamblers, "reasonable" players and any other "lambda" gambler all have cognitive biases 6, 16. And it is the activation of certain areas of the brain, independently of our will, that would fool us! 17 A cognitive bias is a mechanism of thought that deviates from a "purely rational" thought. We are all victims, but knowing them is already fighting them (link). The Nobels of Economics Kahneman and Tversky were pioneers in assessing these misleading biases. The most significant cognitive bias for players is the distortion bias of probabilities. We overestimate the positive probabilities with respect to the negative probabilities! That's why a player, even if he knows the game is made to lose, will play. This applies to both gambling and life where we hope to live longer than the average for example. This of course becomes more problematic for the world of finance and economics, hence the work of Kahneman and Tversky. The player, addictive or not, is nothing less intelligent than a person never playing or in a reasonable way. He would fall victim to the distortion bias of probabilities like all the others. A single detail: the addict player will tend to overestimate his chances 18.

Everyday manipulations and biases

The advertising of the Française des Jeux says it: 100% of the winners have tried their luck. The slogan is a pleonasm because "it proceeds from the synonymic repetition by repeating, with the help of different words, the same content, hence a zero information input" 19. This is a slogan certainly to take in the second degree because it is obvious that you have to play to win, but it reveals a serious problem of perception. Indeed, this slogan suggests that it is enough to play to win while the expectation of winning games is unfavorable to the players. This is a nice introduction to critical thinking (see links at the end of the article).

Finally, media coverage has a devastating effect on our already fragile little neurons. The highlighting of significant gains by small signs "Here € 2000 earned" or by the media (TV report, broadcasts, etc.) have a direct impact on our perception 16, 20-22. The reports on the "winner of the corner" are an advertisement offered directly by the journalists in lack of reportage. When a player is exposed to the gain of another person, and especially if this gain is important, said player will take more risks. He will play more. Other studies explain that the player then has an illusion of control (control of risk and gains) 20.

  • Over their lifetime, the overwhelming majority of players loses.
  • Expectancy is the average value of a gain for a ticket.
  • Chance games all have expectations to the detriment of the player.
  • We are all fooled by bias that makes us overestimate our chances.
  • Exposure and mediatization of the winnings of some players result in an incentive to play for others.
  • The best way not to lose money to chance games is not to play
  • Problem gamblers are more likely to engage in other risky behaviors (tobacco, alcohol).
